Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy can be boiled down to one sentence: the cultivation of a whole person. I help my students in becoming outstanding individuals and citizens with ethics, empathy, and expertise to achieve their personal values and serve the public good. My approach to achieving this ultimate goal of education is to prioritize development of critical thinking and intercultural competence, as well as the principle of inclusiveness and empathetic learning for a diverse group of learners, something I have done over the last sixteen years teaching students and audiences across Chinese and Western cultures.

Teaching in the United States

At the University of Kansas, I have independently taught four different communication courses for undergraduates across all majors, most of whom are native English speakers, as well as a group of international students coming from all over the world.

Courses Taught:

COMS 539 Argumentation

COMS 322 Audience-Centered Communication at Workplace

COMS 246 Intercultural Communication

COMS 130 Speaker-Audience Communication

Teaching in China

During my decade-long experience serving as a faculty member at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), I have taught a series of courses in and beyond BFSU about public communication, speech communication, English language studies, or Interpretation. Under the support of the School of English for Specific Purposes at BFSU, I designed and taught the first English-language debate and argumentation course in China as part of the compulsory curriculum for non-English majors.

Student Evaluation

  • “Extremely good instructor. Really cared about their students and improving their delivering towards the audience.” (COMS 322 Audience-Centered Communication in Workplace 18849)

  • “Thank you for being so kind and caring about your students! Your guidance throughout this course allowed me to significantly improve my public speaking skills.” (COMS 322 Audience-Centered Public Speaking in Workplace 29800)

  • “Xi Li was very helpful and encouraged collaboration among the students. She created a great class environment and was very welcoming.” (COMS 322 Audience-Centered Public Speaking in Workplace 18350)

(From Students at Beijing Foreign Studies University)

  • “Our teacher is a stimulating teacher. At first, most of us refused to deliver our ideas. Timidity is one reason and didn't know what to say is the other reason. Starting from a valid argument, Cecilee helped us make progress step-by-step, and later we were able to deliver a full BP debate. At the last period of this course, we could stand in the front and present our arguments for 6 minutes in an impromptu debate. PCCT is the best course I’ve took in SESP [School of English for Specific Purposes]. Hope there could be more students having the chance to take part in this course.” (Public Communication and Critical Thinking)

  • “PCCT course is like a miracle drug. It is no exaggeration to say that this course changed me. At the beginning, we were required to have a short speech for about 3 minutes which should combine the claim, the warrant and the evidence. I struggled to fill in that period but usually stopped in two minutes and had nothing to say. However, in the end, after one year’s practice, I can have a 7 minutes’ English speech and if allowed, I could continue forever… Now I know the basic needs for a good speech and can behave calmly and smartly in the stage. The pitch, volume, gesture, speed, logic and so on of speech are so important and I need more practice for an excellent one…I want to thank you sincerely in my heart without flattering. You and the course made me a better person, a calm confident person who now can voice her opinion freely.” (Public Communication and Critical Thinking)
